What Are the Virgin Voyages Fare Tiers?

Virgin Voyages sells three fare tiers — Base, Essential and Premium — and you choose one on top of whichever cabin you want. The cabin decides the room; the fare tier decides the terms attached to it.

That distinction trips people up, because Virgin's top suite category, RockStar Quarters, carries inclusions generous enough that it behaves like a fourth tier. It is not a fare tier you select — it is a cabin category with its own perks, covered in our RockStar suites guide.

Here is what separates the three tiers:

Shore Things are the exception to all of this: excursion booking opens 120 days out for every guest regardless of fare tier (135 days for RockStar guests). There is no tiered advantage there, so do not upgrade expecting one.

How Much Does the Dining Reservation Window Actually Matter?

This is the single biggest practical difference between the tiers, and the reason most Canadians upgrade.

Dining at all 20+ restaurants is included at every tier — nobody pays a cover charge. What you are buying is access to the good time slots. By the time Base fare guests can book at 15 days out, Essential and Premium guests have already taken many of the best 7:00–8:00 PM tables at The Wake, Test Kitchen and Pink Agave.

Essential opens reservations at 45 days, a full month ahead of Base. Premium opens at 60 days — 45 days ahead of Base. For a couple who care about eating at a reasonable hour on a full ship, that gap is the whole decision.

Our dining reservation strategy guide covers which restaurants to book first and what to do if you are on a Base fare and the good slots are gone.

Which Fare Tier Is Right for Canadian Travellers?

Base is perfectly fine when you are sailing shoulder season (April–May, early December) on a less full ship, you are relaxed about dinner timing, you are happy to be assigned a cabin, and you are certain about your dates — because the deposit is generally non-refundable.

Essential is the balance most first-timers want. The 45-day dining window is a meaningful head start over Base, you get to pick and later change your specific cabin, and cancellation terms are more forgiving. It costs less than Premium while still putting you well ahead of Base fare guests.

Premium earns its price when dinner reservations are a genuine priority, or when you would otherwise buy a Wi-Fi upgrade and a Bar Tab separately — at which point the tier often costs less than the parts. It also carries the most flexible cancellation terms, which matters more for Canadians than most, since a cruise cancellation usually means unwinding a cross-border flight too.

Can You Lower the Price of Any Tier?

Yes, and this is independent of which tier you pick. Canada Resident Rates can reduce the fare by 5–15% on select sailings. Group rates and First Mate perks such as onboard credit stack on top and are not available booking directly on virginvoyages.com. You will never pay more than booking direct, and availability is capacity-controlled and varies by sailing.

To compare a specific sailing across tiers with Canadian pricing, use our cost calculator, or ask Sean to run the numbers — the right answer changes with ship, season and how full the sailing already is.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many fare tiers does Virgin Voyages have?

Three: Base, Essential and Premium. You select one on top of whichever cabin you book. RockStar Quarters is a suite cabin category rather than a fare tier, though its inclusions — including a 120-day dining reservation window — work like a higher tier.

What is the difference between Base and Essential on Virgin Voyages?

Cabin choice and dining access. Base assigns your cabin automatically (GTY — guarantee) and opens dining reservations 15 days before sailing. Essential lets you pick your exact cabin and change it later, and opens dining at 45 days. Essential also has more flexible cancellation terms; Base deposits are generally non-refundable.

Is Premium fare worth it on Virgin Voyages?

It is worth it if dinner reservations matter to you, or if you would buy Wi-Fi and a Bar Tab separately anyway. Premium opens dining reservations 60 days out — 45 days ahead of Base fare guests — includes Premium Wi-Fi, and carries the most flexible cancellation terms. On a full sailing where the 7:00–8:00 PM slots go quickly, that window is the main thing you are buying.

Can you choose your cabin on a Virgin Voyages Base fare?

No. Base fares are auto-assigned guarantee (GTY) cabins — you are guaranteed a cabin in the category you booked, but you cannot choose the specific room or change it later. Essential, Premium and suite fares all let you pick your cabin and switch it afterwards.

Are RockStar Quarters a Virgin Voyages fare tier?

No — RockStar Quarters is a cabin category, not a fare tier. Virgin's cabins fall into four families: Insides, Sea View, Sea Terrace and RockStar Quarters. RockStar and Mega RockStar come with perks that resemble a top fare tier, including a 120-day dining reservation window and a dedicated RockStar Agent.

Do Virgin Voyages fare tiers affect Shore Things bookings?

No. Unlike dining, shore excursions open at the same time for everyone — 120 days before sailing, or 135 days for RockStar guests. There is no Base, Essential or Premium advantage on Shore Things, so do not upgrade your fare expecting earlier excursion access.

Are Virgin Voyages Base fare deposits refundable?

Generally no. Base fare deposits are typically non-refundable. Essential is more flexible and Premium is the most flexible. Cancellation penalties also depend on timing — 120+ days out carries the lowest penalty, and under 60 days is typically non-refundable at any tier. For Canadians this makes trip cancellation insurance especially worthwhile given cross-border flight dependencies.
